Troubleshooting Problems Opening ACU Files
Common ACU Opening Problems
ACUCOBOL-GT Isn't There
You attempt to load your ACU file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The ACU File Extension". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because ACUCOBOL-GT isn't installed on your PC. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: If you don't have ACUCOBOL-GT installed, and you know of another program to open your ACU file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Outdated ACUCOBOL-GT
Your Machine Independent COBOL Object File file is incompatible with ACUCOBOL-GT because you might have the wrong version installed. If you've got the wrong version of ACUCOBOL-GT installed, you'll need to install the correct version. The primary cause of this problem is that your Machine Independent COBOL Object File file was created by a different (newer) version of ACUCOBOL-GT than what's installed.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the ACU file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening ACU files are due to having the wrong version of ACUCOBOL-GT installed.
Associated Difficulties Loading ACU Files
You can still experience errors opening ACU files even with the latest version of ACUCOBOL-GT installed on your PC. If you are continuing to have errors with loading ACU files, other external issues might be to blame. These issues include:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for ACU
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry ACU description
- Corrupt install of ACUCOBOL-GT or other ACU-related program
- Your ACU can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- The ACU is infected with a virus
- ACU-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Machine Independent COBOL Object File file
