Troubleshoot ATC Files

Issues Opening ATC Files

Missing Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D

When trying to open your ATC file, you get the error "Can't Open ATC File Type". Customarily, this means that Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D is not installed on %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the ATC file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: If you don't have Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D installed, and you know of another program to open your ATC file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Wrong Version of Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D is Installed

In other instances, your AutoCAD Tool Catalog File file version may not be supported by your version of Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D. If you've got the wrong version of Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This issue mainly occurs when your AutoCAD Tool Catalog File file was created by a newer version of Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D than you have on your PC.

Tip: If you right-click on your ATC file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening ATC files are due to having the wrong version of Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D installed.

Other Causes of ATC File Opening Problems

Even with the correct version of Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D installed, you can still experience difficulties opening ATCs. Other ATC opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Issues that aren't software-related:

  • Windows Registry ATC file paths that are incorrect
  • Deletion of the ATC file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the ATC format
  • File corruption affecting your ATC file
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your ATC
  • Hardware associated with ATC has outdated drivers
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your AutoCAD Tool Catalog File file

Poll: How many different computer files (eg. documents, videos, audio) do you typically view or edit on a daily basis?
