Troubleshooting Problems Opening FXP Files
Issues Opening FXP Files
Microsoft Visual FoxPro Disappeared
When you double-click your FXP file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Customarily, this means that Microsoft Visual FoxPro is not installed on %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your FXP because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: Another FXP-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Obsolete Version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro installed that's incompatible with your FoxPro Compiled Program type. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This issue mainly occurs when your FoxPro Compiled Program file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro than you have on your PC.
Tip: If you right-click on your FXP file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Regardless, most of the FXP file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro installed.
Associated Difficulties Loading FXP Files
Even with the correct version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro installed, you can still experience difficulties opening FXPs. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening FXPs. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- File references in the Windows Registry for FXP are wrong
- Unintentional removal of the description of the FXP file inside the Windows Registry
- Partial installation of Microsoft Visual FoxPro that did not fully complete
- Something has caused file corruption of your FXP
- The FXP is infected with a virus
- FXP-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your FoxPro Compiled Program file successfully
