Understanding PPD Issues

Common PPD Opening Problems

Adobe PageMaker Not Present

If you attempt to load your PPD file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open PPD Files". Customarily, this means that Adobe PageMaker is not installed on %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the PPD file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your PPD, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Adobe PageMaker Requires Update

In other instances, your PostScript Printer Description File file version may not be supported by your version of Adobe PageMaker. Download the latest Adobe PageMaker version from the Adobe Systems Incorporated website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This issue mainly occurs when your PostScript Printer Description File file was created by a newer version of Adobe PageMaker than you have on your PC.

Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the PPD file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening PPD files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

More Causes of Problems Opening PPDs

Errors opening PostScript Printer Description File files can still occur even with the latest Adobe PageMaker software installed on your computer. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening PPDs. These issues include:

  • File references in the Windows Registry for PPD are wrong
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry PPD description
  • Invalid installation of a PPD-associated program (eg. Adobe PageMaker)
  • File corruption affecting your PPD file
  • Your PPD is infected with malware
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your PPD file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Windows cannot load your PostScript Printer Description File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)

Poll: How many different computer files (eg. documents, videos, audio) do you typically view or edit on a daily basis?
