Understanding ESF Issues
Issues Opening ESF Files
Steganos Password Manager Isn't There
When trying to open your ESF file, you get the error "Can't Open ESF File Type". Customarily, this means that Steganos Password Manager is not installed on %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your ESF with Steganos Password Manager, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: When another ESF application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Outdated Steganos Password Manager
In other instances, your Password Manager Container File file version may not be supported by your version of Steganos Password Manager. Visit the Steganos website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Steganos Password Manager. Your Password Manager Container File file was probably created by a newer release of Steganos Password Manager than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Right-clicking on your ESF, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening ESF files are due to having the incorrect version of Steganos Password Manager installed on your computer.
Other ESF File Opening Causes
You can still experience errors opening ESF files even with the latest version of Steganos Password Manager installed on your PC. Other ESF opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Problems unrelated to software:
- Windows Registry ESF file paths that are incorrect
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry ESF description
- Invalid installation of a ESF-associated program (eg. Steganos Password Manager)
- The ESF itself is corrupted
- Your ESF is infected with malware
- Hardware related to ESFs has device driver corruption
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Password Manager Container File file
