Sources of MSF Problems
Frequent MSF Opening Issues
Mozilla Thunderbird Disappeared
When you double-click your MSF file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have Mozilla Thunderbird for %%os%% installed. The OS won't know what to do with your MSF file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your MSF, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Wrong Version of Mozilla Thunderbird is Installed
Your Mail Summary File file is incompatible with Mozilla Thunderbird because you might have the wrong version installed. Installing the latest version of Mozilla Thunderbird from Mozilla is recommended. The primary cause of this problem is that your Mail Summary File file was created by a different (newer) version of Mozilla Thunderbird than what's installed.
Tip: Investigate your MSF file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening MSF files are due to having the wrong version of Mozilla Thunderbird installed.
Other Causes of MSF File Opening Problems
Although you might already have Mozilla Thunderbird or another MSF-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Mail Summary File files. If you're still experiencing problems opening MSF files, there could be other computer problems. These issues include:
- File references in the Windows Registry for MSF are wrong
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry MSF description
- Defective install of a MSF program, such as Mozilla Thunderbird
- Something has caused file corruption of your MSF
- Your MSF has adversely impacted by malware
- MSF-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Mail Summary File files
