Troubleshoot FM Files
Frequent FM Opening Issues
Adobe FrameMaker Isn't There
Double-clicking your FM file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open FM File". Usually, this is because you do not have Adobe FrameMaker for %%os%% installed. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the FM file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: If you don't have Adobe FrameMaker installed, and you know of another program to open your FM file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Obsolete Version of Adobe FrameMaker
In other instances, your FrameMaker Document file version may not be supported by your version of Adobe FrameMaker. Installing the latest version of Adobe FrameMaker from Adobe Systems Incorporated is recommended. Your FrameMaker Document file was probably created by a newer release of Adobe FrameMaker than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your FM file and clicking "Properties".
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening FM files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other FM File Issues
Errors opening FrameMaker Document files can still occur even with the latest Adobe FrameMaker software installed on your computer. If you are continuing to have errors with loading FM files, other external issues might be to blame. Other contributing causes:
- File references in the Windows Registry for FM are wrong
- Accidental deletion of the description of the FM file in the Windows registry
- Partial installation of Adobe FrameMaker that did not fully complete
- FM file corruption
- Your FM has adversely impacted by malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your FM file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Windows cannot load your FrameMaker Document file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
