Sources of WPL Problems

Issues Opening WPL Files

Microsoft Windows Media Player Not Present

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open WPL Files" when trying to open your WPL. Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Windows Media Player for %%os%% installed. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the WPL file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Windows Media Player installed, and you know of another program to open your WPL file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Obsolete Version of Microsoft Windows Media Player

In other instances, your Windows Media Player Playlist file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Windows Media Player. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Windows Media Player if you don't have the right version. Your Windows Media Player Playlist file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Windows Media Player than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: Right-clicking on your WPL, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Primarily, problems experienced when opening WPL files are due to having the incorrect version of Microsoft Windows Media Player installed on your computer.

Associated Difficulties Loading WPL Files

Errors opening Windows Media Player Playlist files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Windows Media Player software installed on your computer. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening WPLs. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • Invalid WPL file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
  • Unintentional removal of the description of the WPL file inside the Windows Registry
  • Microsoft Windows Media Player or another WPL application experienced a flawed installation
  • Something has caused file corruption of your WPL
  • The WPL is infected with a virus
  • Device drivers for WPL-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Windows Media Player Playlist format
