Understanding QWT Issues
Issues Opening QWT Files
QuarkXPress is Not Installed
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open QWT Files" when trying to open your QWT. Customarily, this means that QuarkXPress is not installed on %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your QWT with QuarkXPress, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: When another QWT application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Wrong Version of QuarkXPress is Installed
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of QuarkXPress installed that's incompatible with your QuarkXpress Web Document Template type. Visit the Quark Software Inc. website to download (or purchase) the latest version of QuarkXPress. Your QuarkXpress Web Document Template file was probably created by a newer release of QuarkXPress than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your QWT file and clicking "Properties".
Primarily, problems experienced when opening QWT files are due to having the incorrect version of QuarkXPress installed on your computer.
Other QWT File Opening Causes
Errors opening QuarkXpress Web Document Template files can still occur even with the latest QuarkXPress software installed on your computer. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening QWT files. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- QWT file type Registry entries are wrong
- Accidental deletion of the description of the QWT file in the Windows registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the QWT format
- Your QWT file is corrupted (issues with your QuarkXpress Web Document Template file itself)
- The QWT is infected with a virus
- Drivers associated with QWT software need to be updated
- Windows cannot load your QuarkXpress Web Document Template file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
