CBR Troubleshooting
Issues Opening CBR Files
WinRAR Disappeared
Double-clicking your CBR file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open CBR File". Customarily, this means that WinRAR is not installed on %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your CBR with WinRAR, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: Another CBR-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
WinRAR Requires Update
In other instances, your Comic Book RAR Archive file version may not be supported by your version of WinRAR. You will need to download a newer version of WinRAR if you don't have the right version. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: Right-clicking on your CBR, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening CBR files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other CBR File Opening Causes
Even with the correct version of WinRAR installed, you can still experience difficulties opening CBRs. If you are continuing to have errors with loading CBR files, other external issues might be to blame. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Invalid CBR file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Accidental deletion of the description of the CBR file in the Windows registry
- Invalid installation of a CBR-associated program (eg. WinRAR)
- CBR file corruption
- CBR file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Drivers associated with CBR software need to be updated
- Windows cannot load your Comic Book RAR Archive file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
