Understanding FH3 Issues
Issues Opening FH3 Files
Adobe Illustrator CC is Not Installed
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open FH3 Files" when trying to open your FH3. If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Adobe Illustrator CC for %%os%% installed on your computer. The OS won't know what to do with your FH3 file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you don't have Adobe Illustrator CC installed, and you know of another program to open your FH3 file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Incorrect Adobe Illustrator CC Version
Sometimes your installed version of Adobe Illustrator CC won't support your FreeHand 3 Drawing File file. Download the latest Adobe Illustrator CC version from the Adobe Systems Incorporated website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Most of the time your FreeHand 3 Drawing File file was created by a newer Adobe Illustrator CC than what you have installed.
Tip: If you right-click on your FH3 file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening FH3 files are due to having the incorrect version of Adobe Illustrator CC installed on your computer.
Other Causes of FH3 File Opening Problems
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Adobe Illustrator CC will resolve your issue. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening FH3s. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Invalid FH3 file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Unintentional removal of the description of the FH3 file inside the Windows Registry
- Corrupt install of Adobe Illustrator CC or other FH3-related program
- The FH3 itself is corrupted
- Past or present virus infection has affected your FH3
- Hardware related to FH3s has device driver corruption
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your FreeHand 3 Drawing File file
