Sources of FCH Problems
Troubles Opening FCH Files
Missing Gaussian
When trying to open your FCH file, you get the error "Can't Open FCH File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have Gaussian installed for %%os%%. The typical path of opening your FCH with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens FCH files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Outdated Gaussian
Your Gaussian Checkpoint File file is incompatible with Gaussian because you might have the wrong version installed. You will need to download a newer version of Gaussian if you don't have the right version. This issue mainly occurs when your Gaussian Checkpoint File file was created by a newer version of Gaussian than you have on your PC.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of FCH file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Regardless, most of the FCH file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Gaussian installed.
Other FCH File Opening Causes
You can still experience errors opening FCH files even with the latest version of Gaussian installed on your PC. Other FCH opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Problems unrelated to software:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for FCH
- Corruption of the FCH file description inside the Registry
- Invalid installation of a FCH-associated program (eg. Gaussian)
- The FCH itself is corrupted
- Malware-tainted FCH file can't be opened
- Drivers associated with FCH software need to be updated
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Gaussian Checkpoint File files
