MKS Troubleshooting
Common Problems Opening MKS Files
The Core Media Player Not Present
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open MKS Files" when trying to open your MKS. Usually, this is because you do not have The Core Media Player for %%os%% installed. The typical path of opening your MKS with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your MKS, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Wrong Version of The Core Media Player is Installed
It is possible that your version of The Core Media Player isn't able to open your Matroska Elementary Stream File file due to incompatibility. Visit the Open Source website to download (or purchase) the latest version of The Core Media Player. The primary cause of this problem is that your Matroska Elementary Stream File file was created by a different (newer) version of The Core Media Player than what's installed.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of MKS file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Regardless, most of the MKS file opening problems relate to not having the right version of The Core Media Player installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening MKSs
Although you might already have The Core Media Player or another MKS-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Matroska Elementary Stream File files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening MKSs. These issues include:
- File references in the Windows Registry for MKS are wrong
- Deletion of the MKS file description from the Registry by mistake
- The Core Media Player or another MKS application experienced a flawed installation
- The MKS itself is corrupted
- MKS file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Hardware associated with MKS has outdated drivers
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Matroska Elementary Stream File file
