Troubleshoot PLX Files

Typical PLX Opening Challenges

BBEdit Isn't There

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open PLX Files" when trying to open your PLX. When this happens, it is commonly due to BBEdit missing in %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your PLX because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: Another PLX-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.

BBEdit Requires Update

In other instances, your Perl Executable File file version may not be supported by your version of BBEdit. Download the latest BBEdit version from the Bare Bones Software website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This problem is predominately due to having a Perl Executable File file version that was created by a newer version of BBEdit than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your PLX file and clicking "Properties".

Summary: Not having the right BBEdit version on your computer can cause problems opening PLX files.

Other Causes of PLX File Opening Problems

Assuming you have the right BBEdit version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening PLX files. If you're still experiencing problems opening PLX files, there could be other computer problems. Other contributing causes:

  • File references in the Windows Registry for PLX are wrong
  • The PLX file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Defective install of a PLX program, such as BBEdit
  • Your PLX can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Malware-tainted PLX file can't be opened
  • Hardware related to PLXs has device driver corruption
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Perl Executable File file successfully
