Troubleshooting Problems Opening GHS Files

Typical GHS Opening Challenges

Symantec Ghost Solution Suite Isn't There

When trying to open your GHS file, you get the error "Can't Open GHS File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Symantec Ghost Solution Suite for %%os%% installed on your computer. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the GHS file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your GHS file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Symantec Ghost Solution Suite Requires Update

Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Symantec Ghost Solution Suite installed that's incompatible with your Norton Ghost Image Segment Backup File type. If you do not have the proper version Symantec Ghost Solution Suite (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This issue mainly occurs when your Norton Ghost Image Segment Backup File file was created by a newer version of Symantec Ghost Solution Suite than you have on your PC.

Tip: Right-clicking on your GHS, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening GHS files are due to having the wrong version of Symantec Ghost Solution Suite installed.

Other GHS File Opening Causes

Errors opening Norton Ghost Image Segment Backup File files can still occur even with the latest Symantec Ghost Solution Suite software installed on your computer. If you're still experiencing problems opening GHS files, there could be other computer problems. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • Windows Registry GHS file paths that are incorrect
  • Unintentional removal of the description of the GHS file inside the Windows Registry
