DTE Troubleshooting
Issues Opening DTE Files
DoroTree Not Present
When you double-click your DTE file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have DoroTree for %%os%% installed. You won't be able to double-click to open your DTE because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: If you don't have DoroTree installed, and you know of another program to open your DTE file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Incorrect DoroTree Version
In other instances, your DoroTree Family Tree Data file version may not be supported by your version of DoroTree. Installing the latest version of DoroTree from DoroTree Technologies is recommended. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: Investigate your DTE file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Regardless, most of the DTE file opening problems relate to not having the right version of DoroTree installed.
Additional DTE Opening Issues
Even with the correct version of DoroTree installed, you can still experience difficulties opening DTEs. If you are continuing to have errors with loading DTE files, other external issues might be to blame. Issues that aren't software-related:
- DTE file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry DTE description
- Corrupt install of DoroTree or other DTE-related program
- Your DTE file is corrupted (issues with your DoroTree Family Tree Data file itself)
- Your DTE is infected with malware
- Drivers associated with DTE software need to be updated
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the DoroTree Family Tree Data file
