Understanding PGD Issues

Frequent PGD Opening Issues

PGP Desktop Disappeared

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open PGD Files" when trying to open your PGD. Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because PGP Desktop isn't installed on your PC. The typical path of opening your PGD with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your PGD file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Incorrect PGP Desktop Version

In other instances, your PGP Disk Image file version may not be supported by your version of PGP Desktop. You will need to download a newer version of PGP Desktop if you don't have the right version. The primary cause of this problem is that your PGP Disk Image file was created by a different (newer) version of PGP Desktop than what's installed.

Tip: If you right-click on your PGD file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Summary: Not having the right PGP Desktop version on your computer can cause problems opening PGD files.

Other Causes of PGD File Opening Problems

Errors opening PGP Disk Image files can still occur even with the latest PGP Desktop software installed on your computer. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening PGDs. Issues that aren't software-related:

  • PGD file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the PGD file in the Windows registry
  • Invalid installation of a PGD-associated program (eg. PGP Desktop)
  • PGD file corruption
  • PGD file integrity has been compromised by malware
  • Device drivers for PGD-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your PGP Disk Image file
