Understanding TC Issues

Common Problems Opening TC Files

TrueCrypt Isn't There

When trying to open your TC file, you get the error "Can't Open TC File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have TrueCrypt for %%os%% installed. The typical path of opening your TC with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your TC, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Incorrect TrueCrypt Version

In other instances, your TrueCrypt Volume file version may not be supported by your version of TrueCrypt. If you do not have the proper version TrueCrypt (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is predominately due to having a TrueCrypt Volume file version that was created by a newer version of TrueCrypt than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the TC file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.

Conclusion: The majority of TC file opening issues are due to not having the correct TrueCrypt version installed.

Associated Difficulties Loading TC Files

You can still experience errors opening TC files even with the latest version of TrueCrypt installed on your PC. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening TCs. Other contributing causes:

  • Windows Registry TC file paths that are incorrect
  • The TC file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Defective install of a TC program, such as TrueCrypt
  • The TC itself is corrupted
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your TC
  • Hardware associated with TC has outdated drivers
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open TrueCrypt Volume files
