MDA Troubleshooting

Common Problems Opening MDA Files

Microsoft Access Isn't There

You attempt to load your MDA file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The MDA File Extension". If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft Access installed for %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your MDA because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: Another MDA-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.

Microsoft Access is Out-of-Date

In other instances, your Access Add-in File file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Access. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Access if you don't have the right version. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: If you right-click on your MDA file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Primarily, problems experienced when opening MDA files are due to having the incorrect version of Microsoft Access installed on your computer.

Other MDA File Issues

Errors opening Access Add-in File files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Access software installed on your computer. Other MDA opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Problems unrelated to software:

  • MDA file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Unintentional removal of the description of the MDA file inside the Windows Registry
  • Partial installation of Microsoft Access that did not fully complete
  • File corruption affecting your MDA file
  • The MDA is infected with a virus
  • Device drivers for MDA-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Access Add-in File file

Poll: How many different computer files (eg. documents, videos, audio) do you typically view or edit on a daily basis?
