Troubleshoot MDE Files

Troubles Opening MDE Files

Microsoft Access Not Present

Double-clicking your MDE file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open MDE File". Customarily, this means that Microsoft Access is not installed on %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your MDE file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your MDE file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Outdated Microsoft Access

Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft Access installed that's incompatible with your Compiled Access Add-in File type. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Access if you don't have the right version. This issue mainly occurs when your Compiled Access Add-in File file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Access than you have on your PC.

Tip: Investigate your MDE file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Access version on your computer can cause problems opening MDE files.

Associated Difficulties Loading MDE Files

Assuming you have the right Microsoft Access version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening MDE files. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening MDE files. Other contributing causes:

  • Windows Registry MDE file paths that are incorrect
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the MDE file in the Windows registry
  • Invalid installation of a MDE-associated program (eg. Microsoft Access)
  • MDE file corruption
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your MDE
  • Device drivers for MDE-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Compiled Access Add-in File file successfully
