Troubleshoot DLL Files

Common DLL Opening Problems

Microsoft Visual FoxPro Not Present

You attempt to load your DLL file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The DLL File Extension". If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft Visual FoxPro installed for %%os%%. The typical path of opening your DLL with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your DLL, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Obsolete Version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro

In other instances, your Dynamic Link Library file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: Right-clicking on your DLL, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Visual FoxPro version on your computer can cause problems opening DLL files.

Other Causes of DLL File Opening Problems

Even with the correct version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro installed, you can still experience difficulties opening DLLs. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening DLLs. Additional factors include:

  • DLL file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • The DLL file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Corrupt install of Microsoft Visual FoxPro or other DLL-related program
  • File corruption affecting your DLL file
  • The DLL is infected with a virus
  • Device drivers for DLL-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Dynamic Link Library format
