Understanding CER Issues

Frequent CER Opening Issues

Internet Explorer Isn't There

You attempt to load your CER file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The CER File Extension". If so, it typically means that you don't have Internet Explorer installed for %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your CER with Internet Explorer, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: Another CER-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.

Internet Explorer is Out-of-Date

Sometimes your installed version of Internet Explorer won't support your Internet Security Certificate file. If you've got the wrong version of Internet Explorer installed, you'll need to install the correct version. The primary cause of this problem is that your Internet Security Certificate file was created by a different (newer) version of Internet Explorer than what's installed.

Tip: Right-clicking on your CER, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Summary: Not having the right Internet Explorer version on your computer can cause problems opening CER files.

More Causes of Problems Opening CERs

Although you might already have Internet Explorer or another CER-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Internet Security Certificate files. Other CER opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Problems unrelated to software:

  • File references in the Windows Registry for CER are wrong
  • The CER file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Internet Explorer or another CER application experienced a flawed installation
  • Your CER can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Your CER has adversely impacted by malware
  • Hardware related to CERs has device driver corruption
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Internet Security Certificate file successfully
