SMI File Summary

Our most recent information indicates that SMI files are associated with four unique file types (the most prevalent being the Self-Mounting Disk Image format) and can be viewed primarily with ShrinkWrap, including eleven other known software applications (listed below). The majority of SMI files are considered Disk Image Files, but they can also be Video Files or Graphic Files.

Mac, Windows, and iOS operating systems can be used to view SMI files. Both desktop and mobile devices enable you to view and (sometimes) edit these files, depending on the software used. The main SMI file type has a Popularity Rating of "Low", meaning these files are not frequently present on your typical desktop or mobile device.

If you would like to learn more about SMI files and the software that opens them, please see the additional detailed information below. Also, you can learn how to do some basic SMI file troubleshooting if you are having trouble opening these files.

Troubleshoot SMI Files

Troubles Opening SMI Files

ShrinkWrap Isn't There

When you double-click your SMI file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have ShrinkWrap installed for %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the SMI file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: Another SMI-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.

ShrinkWrap Requires Update

In other instances, your Self-Mounting Disk Image file version may not be supported by your version of ShrinkWrap. Installing the latest version of ShrinkWrap from Aladdin Systems is recommended. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: Right-clicking on your SMI, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening SMI files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Associated Difficulties Loading SMI Files

Assuming you have the right ShrinkWrap version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening SMI files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading SMI files, other external issues might be to blame. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • SMI file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Unintentional removal of the description of the SMI file inside the Windows Registry
  • Invalid installation of a SMI-associated program (eg. ShrinkWrap)
  • Your SMI can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • SMI file integrity has been compromised by malware
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your SMI file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Self-Mounting Disk Image file successfully

Poll: What file type do you use the most at work / in school?
