SVC File Complications

Troubles Opening SVC Files

Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) is Not Installed

If you attempt to load your SVC file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open SVC Files". Customarily, this means that Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) is not installed on %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your SVC file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) installed, and you know of another program to open your SVC file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) Requires Update

In other instances, your WCF Web Service File file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS). Visit the Microsoft Corporation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS). This issue mainly occurs when your WCF Web Service File file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) than you have on your PC.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of SVC file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Primarily, problems experienced when opening SVC files are due to having the incorrect version of Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) installed on your computer.

Other SVC File Issues

Even with the correct version of Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) installed, you can still experience difficulties opening SVCs. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening SVC files. Additional factors include:

  • SVC file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • The SVC file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the SVC format
  • Your SVC can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Your SVC has adversely impacted by malware
  • SVC-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your WCF Web Service File file successfully
