ROFF File Complications

Frequent ROFF Opening Issues

Unix Not Present

Double-clicking your ROFF file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open ROFF File". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Unix for %%os%% installed on your computer. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: If you don't have Unix installed, and you know of another program to open your ROFF file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Outdated Unix

In other instances, your Unformatted Manual Page file version may not be supported by your version of Unix. Installing the latest version of Unix from AT&T Labs is recommended. This issue mainly occurs when your Unformatted Manual Page file was created by a newer version of Unix than you have on your PC.

Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the ROFF file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.

Regardless, most of the ROFF file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Unix installed.

Other ROFF File Opening Causes

In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Unix will resolve your issue. If you are continuing to have errors with loading ROFF files, other external issues might be to blame. These issues include:

  • Windows Registry ROFF file paths that are incorrect
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry ROFF description
  • Invalid installation of a ROFF-associated program (eg. Unix)
  • The ROFF itself is corrupted
  • Your ROFF is infected with malware
  • Drivers associated with ROFF software need to be updated
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your Unformatted Manual Page file
