Primary MANIFEST File Association

.MANIFEST
Extension:.manifest
Classification:Windows Application Manifest File

MANIFEST file extension refers to an XML document Windows software application package contents or the manifest. These files are used by several Windows technologies to configure and deploy software including ClickOnce and CLR. CLR stands for Common Language Runtime. It can be seen as a compound file extension ".exe.manifest". End users may see this file extension in the temporary directories of ClickOnce but the users of these files are only software developers. ClickOnce application may stop working if MANIFEST files are edited or deleted. The XML schema of MANIFEST can be viewed on Manifest File Shema page. The end user may see CDF-MS files beside MANIFEST files. This because MANIFEST files can be compiled into CDF-MS to have faster access to application parameters.

MANIFEST File Complications

Issues Opening MANIFEST Files

Microsoft Notepad Disappeared

You attempt to load your MANIFEST file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The MANIFEST File Extension". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Notepad for %%os%% installed on your computer. The OS won't know what to do with your MANIFEST file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: Another MANIFEST-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.

Incorrect Microsoft Notepad Version

In other instances, your Windows Application Manifest File file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Notepad. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Notepad if you don't have the right version. This issue mainly occurs when your Windows Application Manifest File file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Notepad than you have on your PC.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of MANIFEST file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Regardless, most of the MANIFEST file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Notepad installed.

More Causes of Problems Opening MANIFESTs

Even with the correct version of Microsoft Notepad installed, you can still experience difficulties opening MANIFESTs. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening MANIFEST files. These issues include:

  • Invalid MANIFEST file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry MANIFEST description
  • Partial installation of Microsoft Notepad that did not fully complete
  • Something has caused file corruption of your MANIFEST
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your MANIFEST
  • Device drivers for MANIFEST-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Windows Application Manifest File files
