Troubleshooting Problems Opening ASM Files
Common ASM Opening Problems
Microsoft Notepad Disappeared
Double-clicking your ASM file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open ASM File". If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft Notepad installed for %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your ASM with Microsoft Notepad, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Notepad installed, and you know of another program to open your ASM file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Microsoft Notepad Requires Update
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Assembly Language Source Code File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Notepad if you don't have the right version. This issue mainly occurs when your Assembly Language Source Code File file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Notepad than you have on your PC.
Tip: Investigate your ASM file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening ASM files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Notepad installed.
Other Causes of ASM File Opening Problems
Errors opening Assembly Language Source Code File files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Notepad software installed on your computer. Other ASM opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Issues that aren't software-related:
- Invalid ASM file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry ASM description
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the ASM format
- Something has caused file corruption of your ASM
- Malware-tainted ASM file can't be opened
- Device drivers for ASM-related hardware are out-of-date
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Assembly Language Source Code File file
