PKG File Complications

Issues Opening PKG Files

macOS Removed

If you attempt to load your PKG file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open PKG Files". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because macOS isn't installed on your PC. The typical path of opening your PKG with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: When another PKG application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Wrong Version of macOS is Installed

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Apple MacOS Installer Package file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Installing the latest version of macOS from Apple is recommended. This issue mainly occurs when your Apple MacOS Installer Package file was created by a newer version of macOS than you have on your PC.

Tip: Right-clicking on your PKG, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening PKG files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Other Causes of PKG File Opening Problems

Errors opening Apple MacOS Installer Package files can still occur even with the latest macOS software installed on your computer. Other PKG opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Issues that aren't software-related:

  • PKG file type Registry entries are wrong
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the PKG file in the Windows registry
  • Corrupt install of macOS or other PKG-related program
  • The PKG itself is corrupted
  • Your PKG is infected with malware
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your PKG file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Apple MacOS Installer Package files
